Susan Bernard
National Director
Alliance Women Ministries
Susan grew up in the C&MA First Alliance Church in Mansfield, Ohio, where she received
Christ into her life at age 7. During Junior High, Susan felt the call to missions, but
did not commit her life to missionary service until she was a junior in high school.
During her time at Nyack College, she met Ed Bernard who was already a missionary candidate
scheduled to leave for Irian Jaya, Indonesia (now called Papua). Ed departed for the field
while Susan stayed at Nyack to complete two more years of her education. Following her
graduation, Susan went to Irian Jaya where she and Ed were married. She served as a C&MA
missionary there for 18 years and was involved in leading women’s Bible Studies, doing
children’s work, training women to teach, and involved in leadership development through
teaching in the Bible School and later in a Leadership Development program for the leaders
of six tribal groups.
Upon returning to the states, Susan became involved in church planting and church rehabilitation
situations along with her husband. She taught Bible Studies and was involved in leading children’s
choirs along with serving on the missions committee of the district and planned many missions
conferences. Susan also began to be a part of Alliance Women ministries, serving as district
secretary, then district director. Following that she was asked to serve on the national team
as Assistant Director. In June 2005, Susan was elected to serve as the Alliance Women Ministries
National Director.
She is the mother of 4 grown children and 14 grandchildren. Susan has a passion for women’s and
children’s ministries and wants to be involved in partnering with our Alliance overseas workers
to encourage and enhance their ministries.
